It is a chronic infectious disease caused by bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae. It affects the skin, mucosa, upper respiratory system, eyes and even involves nerves. It can spread from one person to another by only a prolonged close contact.
Painful thickening of nerves, skin discoloration, loss of sensation in skin, thickened patches of skin, nasal congestion and even nose bleeding. It can lead to physical disabilities and psychological impairment.
The skin lesions appear as light red or purplish spots. Also, it is the more benign type and is accompanied by involvement of nerves leading to numbness of the extremities, contractures, and ulceration.
The skin lesions appear as yellow or brown infiltrated nodules (protuberances) affecting the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and throat. These are associated with thickening of the skin, especially the face and ears.
